What is the UFE Procedure?

Columbia interventional radiologists use a painless, safe, effective, and minimally invasive procedure called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) to treat your uterine fibroids.

UFE does not require general anesthesia or surgery, so most of our patients can return to normal activities within a week.

Female doctor speaks with a patient during a UFE consultation in a medical office with anatomical charts on the wall.

During the procedure, an interventional radiologist uses tiny tools and image guidance to block the blood flow to the fibroids.

Without a blood supply, the fibroids shrink and eventually die. The body then absorbs the dead fibroid tissue, which is eliminated naturally.
