Heart valve disease puts strain on your heart and makes it harder to do the things you love. We can repair or replace the damaged valve and get your heart working better. Our specialists provide excellent care for all types of valvular heart disease, including:

  • Aortic Stenosis—a narrowing of the aortic valve that restricts blood flow.
  • Aortic Regurgitation—blood flows backward into the left ventricle because the aortic valve doesn't close completely.
  • Mitral Stenosis—a narrowing of the mitral valve that restricts blood flow.
  • Mitral Regurgitation—blood flows backward into the left atrium because the mitral valve doesn't close completely.
  • Mitral Valve Prolapse—the flaps or cusps of the mitral valve bulge into the left atrium as the heart contracts.
  • Tricuspid Regurgitation—blood flows backward into the right atrium because the tricuspid valve doesn't close completely.
  • Tricuspid Stenosis—a narrowing of the tricuspid valve that restricts blood flow.

Conditions We Treat

Thanks to interventional cardiology, we can treat all types of valvular heart disease without surgery. That means less pain, lower risk of complications, and faster recovery—and more options for patients who can't have surgery. Minimally invasive treatments include:

  • Annuloplasty—a ring is implanted at the base of a valve to reshape and strengthen it.
  • Aortic Valve Repair—the aortic valve is reshaped to restore healthy blood flow.
  • Mitral Valve Repair—a transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, or TEER, uses an implanted device to clasp and hold parts of the valve's flaps together. This smaller opening limits the amount of blood that can flow backward. Currently, the only approved TEER devices for mitral valve repair are:
    • MitraClip Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVr)
    • PASCAL Precision Transcatheter Valve Repair System.
  • Transcatheter Valve Replacement—a catheter is inserted into a large blood vessel, typically in the leg. A replacement valve device is then passed through the catheter into the blood vessel using a wire and delivered to the heart. The device is moved into position and expanded. Once implanted, the new valve takes over for the diseased valve. Types of Transcatheter Valve Replacement include:
    • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
    • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement
    • Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement.
      • The Evoque Valve Replacement System is currently the only device approved for transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement.
  • Medication Therapy—we can also optimize your cardiac medications to better manage your heart condition and keep your symptoms under control.

For a healthy heart, put your trust in us.

At Columbia, we have been leading the field of interventional cardiology for decades. We helped develop many of the breakthrough transcatheter procedures used today, and we're driving research toward tomorrow's treatments. That means you have access to the most advanced procedures today:

  • Columbia is a leading center for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Our experts played a key role in the development of this life-saving procedure.
  • We are one of the only sites nationwide to offer the EVOQUE tricuspid valve replacement system. Evoque is the first transcatheter therapy approved by the FDA to treat tricuspid regurgitation.
  • MitraClip is an innovative transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr) therapy developed at Columbia. This clasp-like device can reduce mitral regurgitation and improve healthy blood flow.
