Our Expertise

The human diaphragm is a specialized dome-shaped muscle that plays a critical role in breathing. It also serves as the barrier between the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity. Increased levels of CO2 in the blood trigger the respiratory center in the brain to send an electrical signal to the phrenic nerve, the nerve that supplies to the diaphragm muscle. When the diaphragm muscle is stimulated, it contracts, increasing the size of the chest cavity, which creates negative pressure resulting in inhalation. We exhale due to the elastic recoil of our lungs. Disorders of the respiratory center in our brain, damage to the nerves in the spinal cord, damage to the phrenic nerve, or damage to the diaphragm muscle itself results in abnormal breathing and respiratory insufficiency.

The Diaphragm Center of Columbia University Medical Center specializes in all aspects of the diaphragm and has the more experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diaphragm disorders than any hospital in the world. Please call (212) 304-7538 or use our online request form to book an appointment today.
